Cade might be the boss, but he hadn't been for long. He was used to being an underling and to working on his own. This was the first time he had someone working for him, and he didn't know where to start. He thought he and Charlie had been doing well, but Charlie wasn't the problem right now. Fin was, and he didn’t work for Cade. Cade couldn't order him around or threaten to fire him if he didn't obey. Cade had no idea how to make Fin listen to him. He hoped Fin had finally understood how dangerous this was, but he wouldn't have sworn on it.

His phone rang about ten minutes after he’d left Fin on the sidewalk. Cade didn’t particularly want to talk to Charlie, but maybe they would tell him how Fin was.

“You okay?” Charlie asked when he answered.

“I'll be fine.”

“Were you hurt?”

“No. Fin got hit on the head, but he’ll be okay, too.”

“I saw him. I hope it means he won’t go out on his own again. We don’t know how dangerous that dog is.”

Cade had a good idea. He’d seen the body on the sidewalk, and he wasn't looking forward to encountering the dog again. He would have to, though. There was no way Fin would stay away, not when his mother’s safety was on the line. Whether or not he’d be more careful was anyone's guess. The only way to keep both Fin and his mother safe would be to get rid of the dog.

But how was Cade supposed to do that?

He sighed. “Is all the research you've done at the office?”

“You mean the stuff on the black dog?”

“Yes, Charlie. Or are we searching for another demonic entity? Are you hiding something from me?”

Charlie huffed. “You’re not as funny as you seem to think you are. I'm sorry if I'm too shaken to think straight. Not everyone is as cold as you, especially when it comes to people they care for.”

That hurt. Cade wasn’t cold, but he was good at hiding his feelings. He’d learned when he was a kid, and it had been useful most his life. No one had cared if he didn't seem to like them or to care about them. And he did care about Charlie and Fin, even though he hadn't seen it coming. He didn't like it, but there was little he could do about it. They’d both burrowed under his skin, and to his surprise, he considered them like family.

A weird, dysfunctional family, but family nonetheless, much more than his parents had ever been.

What was he supposed to do with that? How was he supposed to keep them safe when at least one of them kept on trying to get himself killed? And what about the kiss? Was it going to change anything between the three of them, between Cade and Fin?

Cade didn’t want to care, but he did, and more so than he was comfortable with.
